The Use of Illegal Immigrant Labor in the Poultry (Essay Sample) Content: The Use of Illegal Immigrant Labor in The PoultryStudentà ¢Ã¢â ¬s NameInstitution AffiliationThe Use of Illegal Immigrant Labor in the PoultryIntroductionMigrant labors who work in poultry processing plants are the immigrants. The migrant worker also is a term denoting those people who work seasonally during the time of the peak season when there are plenty of jobs. However, immigrant workers are those who had migrated to their place of work and as the result staying in those places on the permanent basis, unlike their migrant counterparts who keep on moving with the change in seasonal job peaks. The majority of workers in the processing plants are immigrant workers. For instance, they work every year in the poultry processing plants. In consequence, there emerged a shift due to the disappearance of the canning industry where the majority of the migrant workers secured jobs that they could do every year in the poultry processing plants and as the result ending up be ing transformed into immigrant workers. Due to this reason, a majority of these workers ended up being the valuable part of the poultry industry on the Peninsula through the provision of a labor force that at sometimes back was not easy to find. The first appearance of migrant workers first took place during the days of truck farming. Every year, they would be moving from the south to the northwards during the times when the season was at its peak with regards to job availability. After reaching their destination, these workers would end up getting absorbed in the institutions where they would get employed for a very short period. At the times of the Second World War, the migrant workers contributed towards the rise in the demand for labor. Consequently, it led to the expansion of the existing facilities so that the excess labor could be accommodated. However, following the adoption of strict health and safety, health regulation that had the objective of enhancing the improvement in the pathetic living conditions of the laborers in the early 1960s, the was a decrement in the migrant camps. In this case, the notable of these newly introduced regulations was the passage of the strict health department codes. On the same note, growers and the operators had to satisfy these conditions of meeting the requirement needed for water supply, sewage disposal, pest management and also fire handling and safety. Added to this, other factors that also contributed towards the abolition of the migrant camps were the harsh weather conditions and also the invention of modern technologies that could large voluminous work compared to the low quantity and also less efficient human labor. Due to this reason, there was the disappearance of the migrant camps as much as some are still present up to date.FindingsThe immigrant populations' work demand has resulted in that type of environment where are there is careful consideration of laws thus leading to a lot of worries among people. F or example, there are so problems that have the association with the influx of the immigrant workers such as driving minus license, influence of drugs, housing problems and the decline in the value of property.Another area to note in the findings from the study is the issue of the identity crisis that is a product of the identification fraud and also products of identities that have emerged currently. The same instance also has an association with the immigrant who are dire need for working in an industry and at the same time the same industry that is also in dire need for workers. For instance, some forge names while others fake their life history reports with the hope of getting the favor of being employed in this industries thus falling into the category of the illegal immigrants in these poultry firms. The coming of the illegal immigrants indeed has been the cause of the development of the rental market that is more competitive and also much profit generating oriented for people who live in real estate as much as the instance has also come with some problems. For example, in most of the occasions, rented houses are not conducive to living in despite being rented at high costs monthly. Such cases often lead the overcrowding of the majority of these houses. Consequently, the instance leads to the lives of the tenants so pathetic since they have very little time for engaging their recreational activities as they do not enjoy luxurious accommodation. The influx of the illegal immigrants working poultry firms has been so quite challenging on the incumbent communities' cultures since the residents have both found it so hard to integrate into each other's culture. For instance, there have been a lot of tensions between the natives who are so preservative on their traditions and the illegal immigrants who seem not to get accustomed to the life of the native communities. On the same note, theyà ¢Ã¢â ¬re some of the illegal immigrants that are in still confusion w ith the private homes for private parks and as the result created a lot of fear the resident especially at they enjoy their leisure to the lawns owned by the locals. Not forgetting, private pools have also been confused with public pools where some residents end up coming home meeting the immigrants swimming in their pools thus also creating another fear altogether.SummaryThere is the need to undertake an adjustment by poultry dependent communities where the immigrants need to cope with the surroundings while at the same time the native residents must also be ready to drop their hard stand on their traditions so that they can conform to changes taking place in their communities. In this case, the locals should understand that the immigrant also has crucial roles they play in the poultry industry altogether. At the same time, the immigrants should be ready to accept doing all those activities that do not lead to the devastation of the chicken or poultry industry. On the other hand lo ss of immigrant labor would imply that communities would also end up losing mo...

Refresh Organics - Harvard Case free essay sample
Summary ââ¬â This case looks a decision that George Hausman, the co-founder and CEO of Refresh Organics (RO), makes regarding creating a board of directors. RO is a midsize, steadily growing, privately owned company which is a distributor of organic produce. RO has never had a formal board of directors, but Hausman had several close business advisors who he consulted with regularly and referred to as ââ¬Å"the kitchen cabinet. â⬠Hausman considered putting together a true board of directors or if simply making an advisory council would be better suited for the needs of RO. Ultimately, Hausman decided to form a board of directors of ten members, including himself and three out of four members of ââ¬Å"the kitchen cabinet,â⬠replacing his wife, an accountant, with a former Big 4 partner. On the board was also a new minority shareholder from a private equity firm, two executives from RO, and two executives from other companies. The one down side of the board was the some of the executives from other companies would get off topic during board meetings and sometimes members could not make it to the meeting. Hausman routinely sent PL statements and a balance sheet prior to board meetings, but elected not to for the 2Q meeting in order to discuss the issues in person as RO missed its financial goals. Board of Directors vs. Advisory Board ââ¬â Prior to forming the board of directors, there were many considerations that Hausman should have made in determining whether to create an official board of directors or an advisory board. The first consideration is what level of control does he want the board to have. Generally, a Board of directors has a vote in company decisions such as hiring firing of executives, executive compensation, and option policies. On the other hand, advisory boards are an informal group who do not have direct say over major company issues and can be structured for a specific reason. Also, Hausman needs to determine what level of trust he wants to place on the board. Members of the board of directors have a legal fiduciary responsibility to advise management, whereas an advisory board members do not have such responsibility. Finally, Hausman needs to evaluate the cost. Since members of a board of directors have a great responsibility for the company, they are compensated accordingly, whereas members of an advisory board are not compensated or compensated to a lesser degree. Members Characteristics ââ¬â Overall, Hausman did a good job on assembling his board of directors. When determining who will make a good board member there are several things to look for. First a good board has an expert in legal matters, accounting, marketing, human resources, and finance. The only expert missing from ROââ¬â¢s board is a human resources expert. Next it is important to ensure that all board members will be able to regularly attend meetings. While most board members were local, several were not, and it was an area RO could improve. Also for outside members of the board, it is important to have knowledge of the industry and/or target market. With the appointment of the EVP of a large health snack company, Hausman made a good appointment (although location is an issue), but the knowledge that the CEO of the tech company may bring to the table may not be valuable. Finally, it is important to have complimentary personality traits. Overall, the ROââ¬â¢s board of directors is a strong, valuable board. Why join a Board of Directors ââ¬â There are many reasons to join a board of directors beyond the compensation, but specifically there are two key reasons. The first reason to join a board is for professional development. The opportunity to use and sharpen business skills, develop new understanding of an industry, serving on committees, and speaking at events are great for experience and exposure. Finally another great reason to accept a position on a board is the opportunity for networking. Since you will be meeting and working with other professionals, you have the ability to connect and expand your network of contacts which is an invaluable asset in business. While joining a board is not limited to only these benefits, overall, these are the top reasons to accept a position on a board of directors.
